News

2 September 2026

いま、生活者の「Relationship(つながり方)」は大きく変化しつつあります。

Modern Relationships – BBDO Knows released a report

Consumers’ “relationships” are currently undergoing significant changes. In the past, relationships were viewed within relatively clear frameworks—such as romance, marriage, family, and friendship—and brands designed their targeting and communications based on these assumptions. However, today, the boundaries and meanings of these relationships are diversifying, and these changes are impacting various aspects of the “Relationship Economy” — businesses tied to human connections.

For example, the Valentine’s Day sales season—a prime example of the “Relationship Economy.” This traditional business opportunity is no longer merely an event for giving chocolate to express one’s feelings; instead, the ways people spend the day and the nature of their relationships have broadened, including spending time at home or enjoying the occasion with a group of people rather than just one specific person. In this way, romantic relationships are no longer the only “special relationships”; as the range of relationships that consumers value—including friends, themselves, and online communities—has expanded significantly, the very foundation of consumer behavior—namely, “who is the target, when does consumption occur, and how does it happen?”—is changing.

One manifestation of this shift is that gift-giving—which was previously based on the premise of giving to a someone special—is now expanding to include forms such as “sharing among friends,” “purchasing as a treat for oneself,” and “enjoying within small communities.” Furthermore, digital advancements have given rise to a new form of “relationship” known as “Alone Together”—where people connect online even when they aren’t physically together, exchange messages via smartphone while in the same room, or even form closer bonds with AI than with other people.

What’s even more noteworthy is the contradiction in consumers’ psychology. People are caught in the “Loneliness Paradox,” where they want to be alone yet crave connection with others. As AI serves as a substitute for friends, real-life social relationships are becoming more tenuous, and in the realm of romance, dating apps that allow users to enjoy dates with AI are gaining popularity. Furthermore, there are examples of businesses that have successfully turned the demand for human connection into business opportunities. For instance, Japan’s “rental family” services provide a sense of family and belonging, while in other countries, there are services that connect strangers through shared meals at restaurants.

In one case of example, a beverage brand partnered with a drama streaming platform launched a joint campaign called Hijack Socialization that disrupts movie binge-watching sessions by inserting unexpected ads into scenes featuring socializing. By inserting advertisements and discount QR codes into dining scenes within the drama, the campaign encouraged viewers to connect the scene they were watching with the real world, thereby prompting them to visit stores and purchase products. Furthermore, with the theme “Let’s connect in real life, rather than social media (#SocialOffSocials),” this campaign also garnered attention as an initiative that raised awareness about the issues surrounding social media dependency.

The nature of “relationships” continues to diversify to the point where it can no longer be fully captured by traditional definitions, and the business that arises from this—the “Relationship Economy”—is also calling for new developments. In light of this change, brands need to launch campaigns that view relationships from a more comprehensive perspective.

This report examines these trends and, along with specific case studies from global brands, explores the future direction of marketing strategies.

The full report features several in-depth cases illustrating how this has been achieved. For more information, please contact us via the inquiry form.
